Compounding Habits!
“You are exactly where you are, with who you have, with ALL your stuff because of your choices. If it didn’t get there because of you, you still decided to keep it!
That’s empowering because if you aren’t happy, you can change.” - Adaptation of Viktor Frankl
I will publish another blog going over High ROI habits that successful people do! This blog, is an invitation for some self reflection that CHANGED my whole life that I will now share!
One night I was sitting at my desk, afterwork, self-developing at 19 hahaha. This concept of the compound effect was shared with me.
I was asked to take a piece of ruled paper, feel free to grab some, and make 4 columns.
“Regular Habits” was the title of the first column, and I was asked to list out a bunch of habits both good and bad that I did on a regular basis.
After I had my list they revealed the other column headings, “1 Year, 5 Years, 10 Years“
Then they said to go by each row and project out what the result of the habits would be if I kept them up for each respective time frame.
Then they posed the final question, “Will this create the life you want for yourself?” The answer of course was a resounding “NO”
“If NO”, they said, “what are some small daily habits you could start that would get you to where you want to go!?”
If you stopped doing all of the stuff that didn’t help you that much do you think that would give you the time and energy to do what you need to be doing?
With an eyeroll and a yes! I was able to curb a lot of my pleasure/ comfort seeking habits and start instilling some better ones like reading nonfiction books from experts in their fields, becoming more active, building friendships that I still have today, and income producing skills!
It dawned on me at that moment that the decisions I made today would have a ripple effect on MY future AND the future of the people I cared about. “If not you, who? If not now, when?” - JFK
No more could I bury my head in the sand. It allowed me to see how people develop addictions and diseases from their seemingly small habits, and how other people built amazing business and relationships that would just boggle the mind.
Imagine the detriment of wasting a couple of hours daily over the course of a decade!
(4.5 hours of phone usage a day for the typical American per google) ~2.6 years out of a decade spent on a phone. I can’t remember the last productive thing I did on my phone…
Imagine the power of investing a couple of bucks a day into xyz stock 10 years ago and what it would be worth today?
That same opportunity exists right now!
Most importantly invest your attention wisely because the competition for it is immense! ($3,000,000,000,000 Trillion with a ‘T’ - dollar algorithms per the Social Dilemma Documentary) It’s your greatest asset. I hope I help you possess more of it.
